Gatehouse’s Shariah Supervisory Board forms an integral part of the bank’s operations as it reviews all proposed products and services to ensure that they are fully compliant, and in accordance, with the rules and principles of Shariah.
The Shariah Supervisory Board constists of four leading Islamic scholars, chosen as the optimal mix of widely experienced scholars from various backgrounds that will contribute enormously to the development and application of market-leading Islamic financial products.
The members are:
Sheikh Nizam is one of the most widely respected Islamic scholars in the world today. Sheikh Nizam sits on the Islamic supervisory boards of several Islamic financial institutions and is an active scholar in Islamic finance. He received a BA degree in Economics and Comparative Religion from McGill University (Canada) and is currently completing his PhD in Islamic law at the University of Wales. He works as an independent Shariah consultant based in his home country, Bahrain, and his accomplishments and responsibilities include:
Dr Al-Qassar holds a Ph.D. in Islamic Fiqh from Al-Azhar University, and is assistant professor at Shariah College, Kuwait University, where he has also acted as Deputy Dean for Academic Affairs since 2002. He is a member of the Shariah Supervisory Board of several Islamic financial institutions, including The Securities House, and has published several academic works.
Shaykh Haytham Tamim, chairman and founder of Utrujj foundation, a leading Islamic educational institution in the UK, has provided a leading vision for Islamic learning which has influenced the way in which Islamic knowledge is disseminated in the UK. He has recently been appointed on the Al-Qalam Shariah Board (UK) as vice president as well as a Consultant to the Gulf Finance House. While responsible for orchestrating the design and delivery of over 150 different courses, Shaykh Haytham Tamim’s vast teaching experience has manifested in changing many lives. Muhammad Nurullah Shikder is a non-practicing Barrister-at-Law and former Imam at Tunbridge Wells Mosque, Kent. He studied Shariah (Arabic and Islamic Studies) at Darul Uloom Al Arabiyya Al Islamiyya, Bury, UK and obtained BA/MA in Islamic Theology and has degrees in law; LL.B (Hons) (London Guildhall), PGDip in Professional Studies (City University) and LL.M (Master of Laws) in Banking and Finance Law (University College London). He speaks Arabic, Urdu, Bengali and English and presently sits on the Shariah Boards at Arab Banking Corporation (London), Lloyds TSB Bank (UK) and others. He resides and works with prominent scholars in Dubai.
